Ritva Kovalainen & Sanni Seppo: Forests of the North Wind exhibition at K1

Forests of the North Wind is the final part of a forest trilogy based on research through photographic art by Ritva Kovalainen and Sanni Seppo, culminating their three decades of work on forest themes. The first two parts of the trilogy were Tree People (1997), an exploration into Finnish forest mythology, and Silvicultural Operations (2009), which highlighted the downsides of forestry.

Forests of the North Wind portrays our natural forests as diverse spaces and states of being that sustain life. It depicts the rich ecosystems that our northern coniferous forests are at their best. The exhibition also illustrates how forest habitats are becoming threatened and being lost.

Most of the photographs in the exhibition were taken in protected areas near Finland’s eastern border ranging from North Karelia to Lapland. Elsewhere in Finland, only small, isolated fragments of natural forest have survived.

The exhibition urges us to recognise the difference between a natural forest and a commercial forest – to use modifier words when talking about forests, as our tendency to only talk generically about forests prevents us from seeing the true state of forest habitats.

The exhibition is held at The Finnish Museum of Photography K1 from June 10 to October 2, 2022.

Opening hours:

Mon–Fri at 11 am – 8 pm
Sat–Sun at 11 am – 6 pm

Filippa K reopened at Kämp Galleria with a new store concept

Filippa K reopened its flagship store in Helsinki with an updated store concept, embodying the fashion house’s unique take on Scandinavian identity.

The interior balances the raw and the refined by abstracting references from nature into a new expression. The concept is a collaboration between Creative Director Liisa Kessler, her Filippa K team, and Profan: the Swedish architect trio of Disa Braunerhielm, Maximilian Olsson and Anton Bogårdh.

As a nod to Liisa’s Finnish heritage, Helsinki is the first location to be redesigned with Filippa K’s new identity and display its updated logotype. The opening was the first step in the Swedish brand’s international expansion strategy which will see it entering new markets outside of Northern Europe.

The new flagship extends across two floors of Helsinki’s Kämp Galleria. The location was once home to the famous Strindberg art salon and was later transformed into an iconic café and restaurant connected by a grand staircase — the centrepiece of Filippa K’s store today.

Inspired by the Nordic sky, the ceilings mimic natural sunlight with a sustainable LED light concept. Dynamic, programmable hues dissipate through a canvas filter and bounce off the pristine white walls, filling the rooms with a 1970s warmth. The space is grounded by vibrant red-orange flooring throughout: a strong expression of Filippa K’s bold, warm minimalism.

Filippa K’s full women’s and men’s collections are sold at the Kämp Galleria flagship. Women’s ready-to-wear is available on the ground floor, while the upstairs features menswear and a selection of womenswear. Shoes and accessories are placed throughout both floors.
